The way I look at the things I draw.
#1 The Gas Mask:
In my paintings/drawings the gas mask is a symbol for survival and adaptability. It shall point out that mankind is able to adapt to hostile condition and survive. The fact that the gas mask is a man made item and not a part of our body refers that this ability to survive comes not from the nature, but from the abilities of humans and the human mind. On the other hand it should let us recall that it may has been our own fault that we had to adapt by destroying our environment.
#2 The human as a machine:
Whenever I draw/paint the human body as a machine, I want to disenchant it. I want to take away the divine of it, which still sticks in the heads of so many people and illustrate it as what it is. A complex machine based on molecules and biochemical reactions, resting upon the principles of physics and chemistry. This shall not be contempt adverse the human, but in fact an appreciation of nature who managed to construct such a complex machine.
#3 The double helix:
The double helix as a symbol for the DNA is for me the ultimate symbol for life and its beauty. Furthermore I look at it as signboard for scientific understanding of the world and life that makes any form of gods useless. It's also a very personal symbol for me since I'm a biochemistry student and the DNA stands for what I believe and what I want to do.
#4 Flowers:
Flowers symbolize the beauty of life and nature for me.
#5 Skulls:
Skulls have always been a symbol for death an also so in my artwork. Our time here is limited. I do not think that a depressing thought. In my mind that makes everday precious.
